Hi there, I am a Licensed Massage Therapist in the United States and have an urge to move out to the UK, was wondering if anyone could help me with finding the proper information on what all I would need to begin my stepping stone to getting out of the U.S. I have looked at many sites about work visas and such but it all seems like jibberish to me. If anyone could help me find the correct and proper information as far as what is required 1. To move to the U.K. and 2. What is required as far as working in the U.K. and then if anyone knows of any professionals in my area of expertise that could help me begin my new journey that would also be a great help. I have 800-900 hours of hands on experience as well as a 2 1/2 year Associates of Applied Science Degree in Therapeutic Massage with hands on work in Hot Stone Massage, Swedish, Deep Tissue, Reflexology, Shiatsu, Exfoliation, Body Wraps, and Energy Work. (Some of which only just touched base on (Shiatsu (meridians, and Reflexology) I want to continue my education by moving onto acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, but really want to move out to the U.K. and see what unfolds for me. Feel free to respond to the post or feel free to email me as well. Thank you in advance for any information you could help me with.
February 9, 2012 at 10:20 am #35138AnonymousGuestI found this link which has all the info you need, for moving to the UK to work:

I think your classed as a “skilled worker” so to get your visa, you need to apply and have your job lined up for you already. You need to get your new employer to be willing to sponsor you.

You could try:
http://www.workpermit.com/uk/uk.htm
Our work permit and visa system seems to be horribly complicated these days, with tiers and permits. I think you would fall into Tier 2, which seems to be the general route for skilled workers who want to work in the UK. Unfortunately, this means that you would have to have a job offer in place, which is not an easy thing to achieve when you consider that obtaining a work permit can take months. I think there is also an annual cap on the number of workers who can come to the UK under this tier up until 2014.
Essentially, you would need to arrange for a UK employer to sponsor you so I would advice that you contact some professional bodies in the UK such as The General Council for Massage Therapy, the Association of Massage Practitioners, the Association of Therapeutic Massage Therapists or the International Register of Massage Therapists. They may be able to steer you in the right direction and suggest some employers who have sponsored overseas workers in the past.
Good luck! -
