Last updated : 6 November 2012
JOBS are understood to be under threat at Umbro just a week after Nike agreed to sell the business to the US-based Iconix Brand Group in a £140m deal.
Nike announced earlier this year it was looking to sell the Cheadle, Manchester-based firm, which specialises in football kits. Iconix owns a number of clothing brands, including Madonna’s Material Girl and rapper Jay-Z’s Rocawear.
Nike bought Umbro, which lost the contract to make the England football team’s kit to Nike in August, in 2007. Nike put Umbro up for sale after deciding that the Nike brand itself was strong enough for European expansion. It is the kit supplier for Arsenal, Manchester United and Brazil.
Umbro employs 238 staff at its headquarters in Cheadle, in Stockport, and at an office in the centre of Manchester.
Nike is understood to have told staff some jobs will be cut but a spokesman for Umbro said that some employees may move to the buyer, others may stay on to work on the new business [Umbro] and others may transition away.
The company has confirmed that Umbro will retain a Manchester base. Nike said the consultation process is set to last three months and there would be meetings with individual employees once it has completed consultation with their representative bodies.
