Last updated : 31 May 2014
The retail group Alliance will be creating 30 new jobs in Jersey bringing Tesco products to the Island bringing greater choice to the Jersey residents.
Andrew Bagot, the Managing Director of the Alliance Group said he would be very disappointed if a Tesco branded store was not trading this year, ideally within the next six months. The first store will be an existing shop and if this takes off then a second store will likely to be a brand new store.
To date Jersey currently have Waitrose and Co-O op supermarkets on the island so there is always room for choice and competition within the supermarkets and with times ever changing it is and ideal opportunity to allow for more stores and introductions to the island which should be in operation in the next six months.
The products to be sold in Jersey would be at a lower price point due to lower tax rates than the UK but this is to be expected as it would in another country where prices are aimed at differently so will not affect any consumers.
Some local residents and business owners believe that by bringing more choice into Jersey its allowing for things to be spread too thin and that people on Jersey are happy with what they currently have and that they do not need any further choice or diversity but this is moving with the times and in keeping with looking at the future of Jersey.
This new opening is a trial but one which is largely welcomed and should be successful for the residents of Jersey and also for employment with creating 30 new jobs. From an employment perspective this is a welcome opportunity for people to work for a UK supermarket giant and to have opportunities that they may not have had before.
