Last updated : 14 September 2012
A proposal by Tesco to open a store in Leven has created mixed reactions within Fife Council.
While there was no doubt that the supermarket would be welcome news for the area, councillors expressed some concerns about traffic, the effect of the store on other shops and the loss of employment land. Tesco’s proposal is to move to a site that has already been earmarked within Fife’s development plan as an employment site. It was believed that the supermarket chain had offered to pay compensation or to buy an alternative site but this offer has been withdrawn, much to the surprise of local councillors. However, Tesco has now offered to pay £100,000 of the costs involved in developing transport links from the site to the town centre, which has been welcomed, and for other improvements.
The new store would be expected to create over 200 jobs but one councillor has questioned the possibility of jobs losses within other businesses in the area. However, another has stated that the proposal would create a welcome jobs boost, meaning that the debate carries on.
The region’s planning committee will make the final decision on approving or rejecting the supermarket giant’s plans.
It occurs to me that Tesco come across this a lot. We have been fighting in the village against a supermarket (not Tescos) to build here, we dont need it, they want to plonk on the village green! everyone is against it, the parking would be a nightmare and no one wants it, they keep trying, we keep fighting!
Although it would be good for jobs, the village has other things it needs more than another supermarket!
It is good that more jobs are being created, but to be honest, Tesco do seem to be taking over quite a bit. There are many more Tesco stores than Asda and Morrisons etc. Even where I live, there are two Tesco stores within a mile and another a couple of miles away.
