Tesco Planning New Jobs in Dunbartonshire
West Dunbartonshire Council has given the go ahead on the sale of the Playdrome leisure centre site to the supermarket giant Tesco in a move that would bring 300 new jobs to the area.
The council finally agreed the sale at a price of £15million. Tesco have said they will submit a full planning application for an 87,000 sq ft development by midsummer.
The original plan for the site involved the council using funds from the sale to construct a new leisure centre for Clydebank. It will now use its 10-year capital plan to assign £18m of its own money to build a new leisure resource by 2018.
A spokeswoman for Tesco said they had not yet submitted a full planning application, but discussions with the council are ongoing and progressing well. Previous plans by Tesco for a new store in Wallneuk Road in Paisley have been abandoned.
If the new planned store is approved for the supermarket chain it could bring hundreds of new jobs to the area.
The company insisted it will remain dedicated to existing Tesco outlets in the area, as well as its future plan to build a new superstore in close by Linwood.
