Tesco to Expand in Newmarket
Tesco is planning to replace its Newmarket shop with an outlet almost twice the size that will create around 200 new jobs.
The company is eager to replace the smaller, dated store in Fornham Road with a 9,870sqm new shop. The project would also include the construction of new petrol station and double car parking spaces.
Tesco is one of four major supermarkets trying to bring an outlet to Newmarket, with Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda also submitting plans.
The chains involved are increasing the backing of their bids, with Sainsbury’s announcing that Odeon would be opening a five-screen cinema at their location if their application was approved.
Tesco has claimed their planning application for Newmarket was submitted earlier than the other supermarkets in March 2011. The company said its dedication to that multi-million pound investment is as strong today as it was in 2011.
The Fordham Road Tesco opened in the 1980s and the company say the store has become cramped and outdated. A spokesman for Tesco said the expansion would be one of the company’s most eco-friendly.
Plans have furthermore been submitted for a Morrisons in Exning Road and an Asda on land around Rowley Drive.
