Last updated : 31 May 2014
The supermarket chain Tesco are set to open a new Express store in Grange, Cumbria later on this year.
The store will be converted from an original building which was home to the Royal British Region so the supermarket giants are seeking permission to put their company signs up showing the retailers name. This permission will be granted or declined by South Lakeland District Council. This permission needs to be sought first before any work on the interior can be done.
Unfortunately some of the residents and traders in the town claim that it is bad news for the Grange and that it is not what the town needs as the background to the Grange is long established family run and owned businesses and they view this new Tesco store as yet another convenience store that they do not need.
The local residents fear that it will change the outlook of the Grange by having a Tesco express store there but as they say it is too late now and all they can do is wait. The town already has a Co-op in the Kents Bank Road as well as a Spar shop in the main street.
As well as this Tesco planning permission, there is also planning permission in place to build a Booths supermarket store on the Vantage Toyota site in Station Square.
Tesco are trying to reassure residents and working with them to ensure that as little disruption is caused as possible including any extra noise. They are also aiming to play an active part in the local community and they are looking to do something to mark its new opening such as give a grant to a local charity.
They are looking at this store from a positive angle as creating new jobs for the area and for providing convenience to its residents.
