Last updated : 10 May 2013
The new Tesco distribution centre on the former Berkshire Brewery site in South Reading has received more than 4,500 applications for the 1,000 jobs available.
The supermarket giant is working with Reading College, Job Centre Plus, and New Directions for the period of the recruitment process. The roles available at the centre range from warehouse to clerical work.
The company says it wants to see as many local people being employed at the new centre as possible and JobCentre Plus has dedicated staff dealing with enquiries.
A new Tesco Express also opening in nearby Burghfield Common has received more than 200 applications for just 25 new jobs.
Tesco interviewed and recruited staff from the local area to work in the new store on Reading Road to bring a community feeling to the store.
News of the opening of a Tesco Express in the old Rising Sun pub originally caused disagreement in the village with fears it would affect other local shops.
The store, which opens next month, will open seven days a week from 6am until 11pm.
This just proves how popular jobs at Tesco are. If you want to work for them, you need to make sure that your application is completed really well so that you can stand out among all of the candidates for the job.
