Tesco Opening Express in Portishead will Create 20 Jobs
Tesco is ploughing ahead with plans to open a new Tesco Express store in a former pub in Portishead, regardless of regular objections from councillors and local residents.
The news comes after councillors rejected plans to demolish garages behind the building to make room for a car park and to install a cash machine on the outside of the building.
Councillors and residents said the ATM could cause traffic congestion in the area, with people parking on double yellow lines to collect cash. Tesco representatives say it is not a necessity to have a car park or cash point and their plans for opening stay in place.
The retailer has also applied to North Somerset Council for a licence to allow it to sell alcohol at the store – a move which has provoked objections from locals.
The retailer’s plans to open the store will create 20 new jobs, and will be open seven days a week up until 11pm.
Under existing planning legislation, Tesco does not need a change of use permission to use the former pub as a supermarket.
It is estimated the new store will draw around 8,000 customers per week and will benefit the area by bringing in supplementary business.
I like the small ones, we have one in the village, and its a god send if you suddenly remember you need milk at 10pm at night (or 6am in the morning!)
