A teacher is a very respectable job and important in the community. Your role is to shape, develop and nurture the skills and talents of our school children. You must be able to understand children, develop a rapport with them and engage with them so that they will find learning and your teaching method fun. Patience and empathy are important skills, as is a sense of humour.
Children respond well to fun exercises and learning games and if you can create a fun environment, the children will thrive. You will be interacting with the headperson and other teachers at your school as well as the parents of the class, so you will need to be professional with excellent communication skills. Enthusiasm for teaching and a creative ability will also help you in your teaching role. The role involves planning lessons, actioning those plans, marking work, preparing for parents evening and organising off site trips and activities.
To start teacher training, you will need GSCEs in English, Maths and a science subject. Obviously in order to work with children, you will need a Criminal Records Bureau enhanced disclosure. You will then need to study for your Initial Teacher Training and get your Qualified Teacher Status. ITT can be completed by undergraduates, postgraduates, school centred ITT and work based courses.
