Last updated : 23 May 2013
I am used to getting a good salary but when looking for a job is it better to have lower salary expectations so that you are more likely to find something?
At this time businesses are struggling and so salaries may be lower than they have been. You could hang out for a larger one, but if you want to secure a job as quickly as possible, then it is probably better to go for jobs with lower salaries as well.
It depends on your circumstances, if you really really need to change jobs, then yes i would say apply for lower salaries, however you may be asked why you have done so, and “because i hate my current job” really wouldnt be the appropriate answer – maybe something like, I feel i am not being challenged in my current role and need a change of direction, with this I fully expect a lower salary to start with because i may not be as experienced as someone else”
If you can afford to accept a lower salary, and you want the job, then I would say just go for it. There is a lot to be said for having a job that you really enjoy, and if you do well in the position that you’re given, you might find that you are able to get an increase in pay after a certain amount of time anyway.
