Last updated : 11 January 2013
A new ASDA supermarket has been given the green light in Woking even though it has a sister store less than a mile away.
Asda has been given planning permission to build an 82,000sq-ft superstore in Albert Drive, Sheerwater, on the site of the Wandsworth Group warehouse, which will now be moving to the Woking Business Park. The electrical company will move to new premises, allowing the jobs of its 130 employees to be safe-guarded.
The new Asda supermarket will create 400 new jobs in the area and help to regenerate part of Sheerwater. The construction process will also boost jobs in the area over the next few months of building work.
The new store will have parking for around 300 cars, a customer restaurant, and incorporates a new two-way junction at Forsyth Road. The new layout is costing £5.5m.
It will offer a range of food, general home ware and George clothing. The current Asda supermarket at Lion Retail Park will stay open.
Woking Borough Council’s planning committee unanimously voted in favour of the planned development despite mixed feelings from the local residents about having two Asda supermarkets so close together.
Excellent news for jobs! – ASDA are great, love their selection, have to travel over 2 miles to my nearest as I’m in a village and they dont do small ones.
