New Sainsbury’s store at Wolverhampton has been delayed
The new £65m Sainsbury’s store in Wolverhampton city centre is still awaiting a start date and it has now emerged it could be months before works commence.
The Raglan Street site off the Wolverhampton Ring Road was expected to be started in February 2013 but they are still waiting for the programme of works to be finalised.
The proposed 90,000 square foot store on the former Lord Raglan pub site will provide 190 new jobs and includes plans to create 22 homes, office and a cafe and restaurant at the landmark Attwood building.
After a long-standing battle between the two supermarket giants Tesco and Sainsbury’s to build on the land as 10% of the land was owned by Tesco, resulting in the dispute being taken to the Supreme Court, this was finally resolved when Tesco were told they could contruct a 97,000 square foot store costing £60m at another site in the town.
Sainsbury’s will also be opening one of its Local convenience stores on the former Quarterhouse Pub site on Compton Road in the town providing a further 15 new jobs for the local area.
