Last updated : 3 November 2012
Royal Mail is set to create around 1,000 jobs by 2016 as part of a £75m investment plan for its delivery trade.
A new parcel processing centre will open in Chorley next autumn and two new depots will open in Cornwall and Hampshire. A number of existing depots are due to be expanded or moved to bigger sites over the next few years.
But the Union leaders said that Royal Mail’s workforce would not actually expand in real terms because of job losses elsewhere in the business. Royal Mail has cut over 60,000 jobs in the last ten years in an effort to streamline.
This latest investment plan is part of the company’s scheme to increase its parcels business both in the UK and overseas. The UK parcels business is presently worth £5.8bn a year, carrying around one billion items.
The creation of these new jobs will go some way to easing the blow of jobs lost elsewhere in the company.
Wide-scale changes are being brought in to Royal Mail to address the changing face of mail services. The focus will be on becoming more customer-focused and investing in vital new technology to convert the rise in parcel volumes into profitable growth.
This is great news, lots of jobs spread out round the country, working for a top firm, excellent. Well done Royal Mail, lets hope plenty of people apply and the right people are employed
