Last updated : 14 September 2012
A property developer is interested in building a new supermarket close to Morecambe Football Club in the Westgate area of the town, even though it is still in discussions to find a supermarket chain to commit to the project and the site.
The developer, a Cheshire based firm called Ashall Property, has stated that the site is ripe for development and its proposal would bring welcome investment to the town during the current economic uncertainty. It added that a supermarket on the site could create up to 350 jobs, benefit local construction businesses during the build and attract shoppers to other businesses in the area. The site is located opposite the town’s Regent Leisure Park and caravan park and close to the railway line and Ashall has an agreement in place with the current owners of the land to develop the site.
The intention is for the company to discuss its proposal with local people, businesses and the football club and has declared that it is interested in hearing all types of feedback on its plans. Following consultation, Ashall hopes to submit a planning application at the end of 2012.
