Last updated : 23 September 2012
Offshore Group Newcastle will bring more than 800 jobs to the Tyneside area when it builds a £50 million yard in Wallsend. The factory, which was recently given planning approval, will manufacture parts for offshore wind turbines.
The project will involve some demolition work on the site, as well as the revamping of an office building and a car park.
A spokesman for the company declared the approval of its plans to be great news for the business, local people and the North Tyneside area. He added that the company was looking forward to working with the local authority and residents going forward. A representative from the company’s developers said that it was pleased at the prospect of creating employment and boosting business in the area.
Around 100 jobs will be created during the construction phase, followed by 700 when the factory opens. It is hoped that additional jobs will become available through the site’s supply chain in the area. The 36,000 sq ft plant should be fully operational at some point in 2014.
The local MP welcomed news of the development and stated that the local economy would receive a substantial boost.
