Last updated : 11 January 2013
Own-label food manufacturer Samworth Brothers is buying land to build a new factory that will create 200 new jobs and could potentially create up to 700 more in the future.
Leicester City Council has approved a deal with the family-owned pie and Sandwich Company to buy a plot of 50,000m 2 of green-field land in Ashton Green, Leicester to build the new factory.
The new resource will create at least 200 jobs and up to 700 more could follow if the company’s plans for expansion continue.
The site will not be running until 2014 at the earliest, but construction work is likely to commence in the very near future.
Leicester City Council has confirmed that the council has given permission for the company to buy the land subject to the correct planning permission being approved.
The company produces own-label and branded pies, pastries and sandwiches for supermarkets, garages and convenience stores and is the owner of brands including Ginsters, and Dickinson & Morris.
The proposed site is close to Bradgate Bakery and Walkers Charnwood Bakery in North Leicester. With good transport links the area is a hub for food production in the East Midlands, and close to the home of pie-making in the famous Melton Mowbray.
I hope they sort the correct planning out for this. Its an ideal location for the new factory, and with the transport links already in place because of the other factories nearby, it couldnt be better timed. I know the jobs wont be there for another year, but the signs are good, and they will no doubt start the recruitment process this year
