Last updated : 18 December 2011
A planning application is likely to be approved for the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM)former headquarters in Sheffield, to be converted into a casino.
The application was submitted by Brook Leisure, based in Barnsley, to Sheffield Council proposing to convert the building, which has been vacant for over 20 years, into an all-night casino.
If approved by the Planning Committee tomorrow (Monday 19th Dec) the scheme includes 3,500 square metre casino, two restaurants and a rooftop bar and is anticipated to provide up to 130 new jobs. A recent report submitted to the Council’s licensing committee has recommended approval, making this look very likely!
The building has been under the threat of demolition since 2006 when the building was considered ‘out of character’ with the local area.
A local councillor and several local residents objected to the plans with concerns regarding the late-night noise, although the report to the licensing committee has stated that generally casinos appeal to a less boisterous clientele than those visiting city centre pubs, and are managed differently with the dispersal of customers spread over a wider time period resulting in less noise and disturbance.
The proposals for the exterior of the building are also more pleasing than currently exists which would improve the appearance of the building and local area.
