Around 300 people are presently employed on the location of the former Castle Donington power station and it is estimated that a further 1,200 people could gain jobs in the run-up to Christmas. By this time the depot is likely to be handling a million items of home wares and clothing every single day.
The company is particularly employing those with physical handicaps, wheelchair users and conditions such as Down’s syndrome have been trained and employed in an assortment of roles.
Eventually, the company is hoping that 30% of its Castle Donington personnel come from people who have difficulties in finding employment.
Marks & Spencer will directly employ over 1,100 people on the site, with the residual workers being supplied by third party affiliates to handle busy periods.
The vast structure is intended to be a flagship to advanced logistics and is one of the UK’s biggest buildings, being large enough to hold eleven football pitches.
