Last updated : 7 February 2014
London Ambulance Service has been given green light to recruit from abroad becuase they think there is not enough paramedics in the UK.
The UK Border Agency has approved Ambulance Services to recruit from non European countries. Currently there are 250 vacant positions for them to fill urgently.
LAS will try to find their staff from New Zealand and Australia as their paramedic skills and training system is very similar to the one in UK.
Director Mark Whitbread, said: “Year on year increases in demand and a requirement to have more registered health care professionals responding to patients means we are in need of a greater number of paramedics. The same applies for other ambulance trusts across the UK but there is only a finite number of registered British paramedics.”
