Hey Folks
I have relocated over to Liverpool and moved in with my girlfriend,i tried to claim Jsa contributions based and got turned down saying i had not made enough over last calender year and i would only be able to get my stamp paid every 2 weeks which is ridiculous. As previous year was only year i havent worked due to ill health but for 19 years straight always been in work. Also when i applied becuase my Girlfriend works they was asking questions regarding how much she earns and what she do,why do they need to know this as its me what need smoney to sign on go to interviews get a job and so on .
Could someone please advise me if i can get JSA and it wont effect my Girlfriend in anyway shape or form .
Many Thanks

Applying for benefits can be an annoying task. I hope you get some help from this thread, and I always hope I can assist (please don’t take my words 100% gospel, things may have changed).
The reason why the DWP ask if your partner works is because if she earns enough then she can support you both, I know its ridiculous. It happened to my partners family, his father couldn’t claim JSA or any other benefit due to my partner working he has an income therefore he can support the family home.
You may be able to get around this by saying you don’t have a permanent address, in effect hoping home to home, and that her address is merely for mail purposes only. – Please don’t take my word for it in case I’m wrong. and claim for income-based JSA.
Hope this has helped 🙂

Your girlfriend will only be expected to support you if she earns enough. I would just be honest with them, and if you are entitled they will pay whats right. You can always go to citizens advice if you feel you are not being fairly treated.September 13, 2012 at 10:26 am #35548AnonymousGuestHi Troy
As the others have mentioned, the household income is taken into account when any member of that household applies for job seekers allowance. This includes what they describe as co-habiting so you and your girlfriend will fall into that category. What they will do is look at the total income that is coming into the house (eg, wages) and other things such as savings. I also think that you are experiencing problems with your girlfriend’s income being taken into account because you haven’t worked over the last year and have had to apply for income based job seekers allowance.
I know it seems unfair but I’m not sure that there’s an answer other than, as Loztiggy suggests, checking with Citizens Advice that you are being treated correctly. They will go through all of the information with you to ensure that you know what you can and can’t claim. -
