Hi,
I’ve searched the internet for advise related websites but noone seems to want to know, it’s good to know that there are sites like this to assist people in need of support.
I have a bit of a problem, I am almost 26 and have never been able to find work, I’ve also been too stubborn to “ask for help”.
In addition to this I have never claimed benefits of any kind. “Pride” has always got in the way. Instead I’ve had to rely on borrowing from family, as well as compensation from a childhood accident, to get me by.
Now though I am aware that the only way I’m going to find work (and pay people back) is by first claming JSA.
What I am wondering is, having not claimed OR worked in the past – WILL I still be eligibale for JSA?
I have been worried that not having pay slips or other proof of income will damage my chances.

You say that the only way to find work is to start by claiming job seekers allowance – I find this statement ridiculous. You can actively search for jobs without necessarily claiming for benefits.
However, you can receive a lot of helpful advice and information from your local Job Centre, as well as assistance with training to get you started at work and I would strongly recommend that you visit.
You can apply to receive JSA if you have the right to live and work in the UK, this is all the information you need to submit your application for JSA. They will tell you what is required in order for your payments to continue including actively searching for work and attending your interviews and appointments with the JobCentre.

I don’t want to give out the wrong impression with my comment, so let me explain;
I am aware that I CAN apply for work right now but in all honesty I have tried. I’ve tried applying for various jobs, including basic cleaning work, but I get no reply. I am VERY under qualified so noone will even look at my CV. I need an income to help pay for training (I’m planning a home study course) and sadly the only way this can happen is from JSA. It is a last resort but that’s exactly what I have reached right now..
Thank you again for your opinions, though. They may look like nothing but to me every little helps. 😉

I was not aware of that but thank you.
That aside I really feel that JSA is the only way for me to “move forward” shall we say. There is applying for jobs and then there is being able to apply for jobs, at the moment though I seem to be just applying for the sake of it.
This said, I would never claim JSA “for leisure” if you know what I mean.

I appreciate the advice and support from fellow members. I have since thought about this and I have realised that I have come this far without claiming JSA so am not going to start now. I am now looking for work in fast food/small restaurants (think Subway)Thank you again.

I hope you have managed to find something, if no, consider getting someone to look at your CV and cover letter, this could be why you have been unsucessful rather than anything else, a badly written or badly spelled CV will just end up on the dumped pile

You can still do a course and claim JSA but only for 1 day a week and you have to tell the Jobcentre. Hope this clarifies your query.

I’m not too sure. A friend of mine was able to do quite a few different courses to get her back into work, but she was claiming Job Seekers Allowance at the same time. Ask the job centre what you’re eligible for, as they’ll be able to give you all the information you need based on the information you can give them.
You can normally do a course whilst claiming JSA providing it is less than 16 hours per week.
