Last updated : 3 September 2012
Following an announcement in March this year that Barr Limited was to review its concrete manufacturing activities, the company has sold its Solway Precast concrete manufacturing site in Barrhill, South Ayrshire to a consortium backed by Barr Limited’s founder, John Barr, and led by the plant’s former managers.
The deal was supported by Scottish Enterprise and South Ayrshire Council, with funding granted to the site of up to £250,000 through the West of Scotland Loan Fund. Scottish Enterprise will provide ongoing assistance to support the new company’s growth plans.
Local people were pleased to learn that production has resumed, with a workforce of ten.
Barr Limited also welcomed the deal, stating that the sale allowed the company to focus on its core quarrying, environmental and construction services, and wished the Solway Precast site a successful future.
It is understood that John Barr has been working to achieve a deal for the plant since he learned that it was to be removed from Barr Limited’s portfolio of activities. The company intends to target the industrial and agricultural sectors and become the company of choice within its sector.
The deal was described by John Swinney, Finance Secretary, as a welcome development that has brought the site back into operation. The local authority also expressed its delight at the reopening of the plant, which has been operating in the area for almost forty years.
