Last updated : 14 September 2012
Amesbury will enjoy a jobs boost following its announcement that Home Bargains would like to build a warehouse and other buildings in the town’s business park.
The retail company, which is based in Liverpool, is in the process of a successful expansion plan and has a goal of increasing its store numbers in the UK from 290 to 700. A spokesperson stated that the company was keen to move into the south of England as the brand is better known in the north and that Amesbury would be an excellent site.
Home Bargains, which sells a wide range of products, has indicated that it would need 300 staff on site when the store opens and would also like to house the company’s regional training centre at the business park.
The site itself has planning permission for a distribution centre from 2009, although there were many objections at the time from local people on the basis of noise, pollution and an increase of lorries using roads around the site. Home Bargains has stated that it will reduce these issues as much as possible as well as create a desired nearby pedestrian crossing and donate to community initiatives.
The company is expected to submit a planning application in the near future, which will trigger public consultation. The warehouse would take between 12 and 18 months to build and the company hopes that work on the project can start quickly.
