Hi.
I suffer from long term depression. I’ve been off work for the last three years or so. I’m keen to return to work but my circumstances are unusual. The nature of the illness means I struggle to keep regular hours, as when I’m in the middle of an episode I’m often unable to leave the house.
I’m a trained Graphic Designer, but I understand I may never return to this line of work unless my condition improves.
I wonder could anyone suggest some job options for me that I may be able to work around my illness? I don’t really mind what the work is so long as there’s an element of flexibility. Something where I was required to perform a certain number of hours work per week but at unspecified times would be perfect, but I know of no such position.
Regards.
Mike.

First of all, I’d like to applaud your determination to get back into work. Unfortunately, depression is something that some people still misunderstand whereas it is a condition that needs to be managed, just like any physical condition.
First of all, have you checked out online resources such as Mind? They are very focused on employment issues for people who have a mental health condition and might be able to help you. Their website is very clear and organised in subject areas and you might want to e-mail them or phone them to receive detailed advice that suits your circumstances.
If there is no pattern to your difficult episodes, it may be that working from home might be the best option for you. Have you ever thought of undertaking graphic design work at home by working on a freelance basis? There are a number of freelance websites where small businesses post up assignments and freelancers reply with a proposal. Also, there are websites such as Remote Employment where you might find teleworking jobs. Finding an option like this may take away the worry of being able to go to an office on any particular day.
Good luck.November 25, 2012 at 2:51 pm #35719AnonymousGuestI would say working from home too would be the best option for you Mike. Have you looked into this? could you set up your own graphic design company where you work from home? Failing that, try to speak to some companies that work in the sector and see what they can offer, you may be surprised that if you have the qualifications and experience they need that they will jump at the chance to help
February 16, 2013 at 11:03 pm #35720AnonymousGuestI also thought of working from home when I read your post, but you might also like to consider part-time jobs to start off with if you find working from home a bit daunting. It can be difficult getting everything set up yourself, and sometimes it is easier just to have a boss!
