Last updated : 6 November 2012
Sheffield is welcoming the opening of a new Game store in the city centre after bosses conducted a review of all the closure-hit sites.
It is employing twenty people, including some who lost their jobs when the original outlet closed, in addition to 45 staff at the Meadowhall site.
Game Group, which traded under the Game and Gamestation brands, fell into administration after several suppliers refused to provide it with new products. The decline is also blamed on the increasing move to online shopping and fierce pricing competition in the market.
Administrators at PriceWaterhouseCoopers subsequently were forced to close 277 stores across the UK and Ireland.
In April this year the private investment firm OpCapita bought the remainder of the group’s UK businesses out of administration for a nominal £1, saving nearly 3,200 retail jobs.
The new firm, Game Retail, has also reopened stores in Bath and Henley, while outlets in Banbury, Aylesbury and Swindon opened last month.
The new store openings coincide with the eagerly-awaited launches of games Need For Speed Most Wanted and WWE 13.
Game Retail is currently looking at a number of other potential opportunities but is unable to comment on particular sites at this time.
Great news for Sheffield – especially in the town centre. Not everyone can get to Meadowhall, so this is a fantastic start to the year to hear this news. I have friends in Sheffield who are out of work currently and enjoy gaming, so I will be straight on the phone to them, advising them to get their applications in!
