Very helpful thread. Always handy to have a reminder about how to phrase a letter.
I would just like to point out though that in “Civil Engineering” cover letter, it starts with “I write” – to me that is wrong, as it is obvious you are writing, as it is a letter. I was told this a long time back that job application letters should never start with “I am writing to apply” as obviously you are writing. It is possible it has changed now, but I still feel it is incorrect.
Great range of cover letters here. People are always looking for templates and ideas to help with cover letters, because it can be quite tricky to come up with an eye-catching, attractive letter that will win you the job.
I always wonder whether it is best to make the letter stand out in some way or to blend in. It can be difficult because it is likely the letter may stand out for the wrong reason. Trying to use different coloured paper or a witty comment will probably work against you rather than for you. Does anyone have examples of when they tried to stand out and it worked?
