Last updated : 14 June 2014
B&Q and Morrisons have announced the plans to merge the two stores and by doing so they will create 300 new jobs for the Stoke on Trent area. The proposed development is at the Whittle Road in Meir Park and if plans are to go ahead then it will be the existing B&Q store being refurbished and the Morrisons food store being built there as well.
The plans have been backed by many but there are a number of concerns about the impact it will have on the roads as there is already a Tesco nearby and it was seen at a local meeting that there was a divided opinion on the proposed development on Meir Park.
A former local councillor saw the original plans for Tesco going in and objected to them then and now that there will be three supermarkets in a close vicinity he feels that the traffic problems will be even worse despite agreeing that the competition is a good thing, he just feels that the store is in the wrong place and will cause chaos on the Meir Park and the A50. Some of the local residents have also complained for the same reasons and feel the same that they would rather it being built elsewhere so that it doesn’t cause chaos on the roads surrounding the development.
Despite some of the objections we need to look to the bigger picture and see the 300 new jobs that are to be created in the area which is great news for the area and any concerns that local residents have can be aired with the developers. If plans are to go ahead then work could start by next autumn with completion to be done in spring 2015.
Morrisons and B&Q are both excited about the new plans, the new stores, layout and how much easier this will be for their customers.
