Last updated : 11 January 2013
At least 350 new jobs are to be created in Londonderry following the announcement that the city is to get its first Asda store.
The store is to be built in the Crescent Link retail park in the Waterside area of the city and is the only application of nine key projects considered for Derry to be approved.
It is thought that the new Asda store will not only attract shoppers from the outskirts into Derry, but it will also bring to an end a considerable number of local shoppers who currently travel to stores in outlying towns.
Derry is renowned as an unemployment black spot with figures showing that the number of people on unemployment benefit in the city was 8.1 per cent of all working age people. An injection of 350 new vacancies is welcome news to the city.
The new 40,000 sq ft (sales area) Asda store has around 990 car parking spaces and will carry the full range of Asda products including George clothing.
A separate bid by Tesco to open a store in Derry has so far been rejected by the council, but it is likely Tesco will reapply with new plans later this year.
This is fantastic news for Derry. A much needed boost to jobs and the area, what more could the area want. Great
