Last updated : 20 September 2012
Around 200 new jobs will be created at Asda’s new store in Ystalyfera in the Upper Swansea Valley.
The site, which is currently under construction, will also have a petrol station and the development is scheduled to open at the end of November. Councillors have expressed strong support for the project and have taken the opportunity to publicise the new jobs to local people so that they can apply.
One councillor stated that he believed that the supermarket giant would prioritise unemployed people from the area during its recruitment programme as it was required to join a local employment initiative as part of its planning proposal. The jobs would be a welcome boost in the area.
The company has not provided any specific comment on the development but stated that it would be recruiting in the near future.
The development itself has caused some controversy as Asda is building on a former ironworks’ site and has preserved one of the walls as an historical monument. This came as a result of hundreds of local people signing a petition to ask for the preservation to take place for the sake of Wales’ heritage.
Will you be applying for the job vacancies?
I think thats great that they have preserved part of the old building in the new build. You will not please everyone no matter where you try to build, so this i feel is good for the area it sounds like they needed this store and this was the best place to build it
