Last updated : 14 September 2012
Asda has announced an ambitious proposal to open a new store located on the outer edges of Braintree.
Its plans revolve around the construction of a 30,000 sq ft supermarket and petrol station on a site next to Freeport, the town’s popular outlet retail park. The proposal also includes the creation of 75 car parking spaces next to Freeport railway station to boost traffic and commuting facilities.
The supermarket would devote most of the store space to its extensive food range but would also sell its own brand clothing collection, a number of household items and other products such as books, DVDs and CDs.
The proposal, if approved, would add another 300 jobs to the 800 staff who work within the current retail spaces on the outlet park. The supermarket chain will be providing displays and information on its plans in the town next week as part of the consultation process and to start the process of winning over local people. The company is hopeful of a positive lead up to its planning application to the local council to ensure approval of this part of its ongoing overall expansion plans.
I hope this was approved, the area needs these jobs, so i hope this did get given approval and that the plans and building are well under way
It’s great that Asda are looking to open in Braintree but a better site would be just off of the A120 at the junction with the A131 where land is currently up for sale. This would enable Asda to build a bigger store that could stock a greater range of products and would provide a petrol station on the south side of the town. It would also prevent adding more traffic to the already very busy Freeport area.
