Last updated : 9 November 2012
Hi, I am planning a return to work after a long period as a carer to a disabled child, I have a ‘hidden’ disability which isn’t immediately apparent to others. My problem is that I am concerned about disadvantaging myself in an already very competitive hiring environment by telling agencies or potential employers about my condition – it does affect the type of work I can do well, and the working environment and social expectations/culture, however it doesn’t affect the skills I have or the core attributes needed for the job area I’m interested in – I am looking to get back into accounts and am currently studying AAT level 3 as a way of showing employers I’m serious about an accountancy career.
Should I disclose my disability to agencies or potential employers – and at what point would be best, to avoid giving the impression that I am being dishonest? I’d just like to get a foot in the door first before making it harder for myself. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks. :-
Ok, I think it would depend on the application form, if it asks the question about disabilites then you would HAVE to declare it at that point (is the question “do you have a disability that requires adjustments to be made” or something?)
If there is no question about disabilities on the form, then I would probably not mention it if it is a hidden one that doesnt effect the work you are applying for. When you get to the interview stage is the point i would bring it up, but state that you are only mentioning it as you feel they should be fully informed, however you can prove it in no way impacts upon your ability to do the job you have applied for
