Last updated : 6 October 2012
Despite a difficult trading period, Matalan has announced that it will be recruiting more than 5,000 people across the UK into temporary jobs as it launches a major bid to capture a large proportion of the Christmas fashion trade.
The move is seen as a bold one for the fashion retailer, given that it only created 2,300 temporary jobs at the same time last year. The company currently has more than 200 stores in the UK.
The company has decided to increase the number of temporary staff to improve the service it offers to customers at its stores in out of town locations and at retail parks. While the number of new recruits is large, it is normal for retail chains to supplement its core workforce with temporary staff in the run up to Christmas. Companies can commonly make 40% of their annual profits at this time of year.
Other key retailers taking on more staff include Sainsbury’s, Amazon, Argos and Poundland. They are hiring almost 40,000 temporary workers between them.
A spokesman for Matalan stated that it will do its utmost to offer permanent contracts to its temporary staff following the Christmas period.
