Last updated : 6 October 2012
A number of businesses in Carlisle are expected to create more than 400 temporary jobs in the run up to Christmas.
A major proportion of the vacancies will be created by Cavaghan & Gray, which supplies party food for retail clients such as Marks and Spencer. A spokesman for the firm’s parent company stated that between 250 and 300 temporary staff would be needed to cope with the increased demand over the festive season.
In addition, McVities will hire around 100 people in temporary jobs at its factory in Caldewgate, while new stores will include a charity shop, cafe and a temporary Christmas gift shop.
It also expected that Asda and Tesco will need to hire more people in the town over the Christmas season. A spokesperson for Asda stated that its Carlisle stores will probably create a small number of temporary vacancies, while Tesco is waiting for its renovations at its city centre store to be completed before making a decision on how many Christmas posts to advertise.
Marks and Spencer also announced that it will be hiring for temporary jobs but currently doesn’t know how many. Meanwhile, Debenhams has stated that it is looking to recruit 24 people for temporary roles.
