Last updated : 13 May 2013
The proposed overhaul of Clydebank has moved a stride closer with the council agreeing to put up for sale the Playdrome leisure centre for Tesco at a price of £15million.
West Dunbartonshire Council has given the go-ahead on the sale of the site to the supermarket chain in a bid to bring 300 new jobs to the district.
The original arrangement for the site concerned the council using the money from the sale to pay for a new leisure centre in the area. It has now decided it will use £18m of its own money to build a new leisure provision over the next four years.
The Committee put forward a paper go to the Council meeting in June so that work on the new centre can start at Queen’s Quay as soon as April 2014.
Tesco has said that discussions with the council are ongoing and progressing well. Formerly the supermarket giant had claimed that the store would bring hundreds of jobs to Clydebank.
Tesco insisted that it will stay committed to all the stores in the area, on top of its plan to build the new superstore in nearby Linwood.
It will take a long time until jobs are available but it is good news to hear that Tesco are continuing to expand in Scotland. it will hopefully lead to many more new jobs in the future.
